A lot has been said about looking after a healthy scalp and preventing hair loss, but there are also a lot of things we can do once hair has started to disappear in order to encourage regrowth.

It must be remembered, first of all, that the only scientifically proven method of regrowing hair after the start of baldness is to have hair follicle transplants. This is an actual surgical procedure where hair follicles from other parts of the body that are perfectly functional are removed and put on the scalp. First, the working follicles blend in with the skin and hair begins to grow naturally again.

There are, however, other more holistic methods that are credited with encouraging hair regrowth. Massage is considered to be an excellent aid as it stimulates areas of the scalp where hair has stopped growing, and is thought to encourage activity within the follicles and cause hair to regrow. Used in conjunction with coconut oil, rosemary oil or geranium oil (all of which are essential oils so need to be put into a carrier oil or neutral shampoo) the regenerative properties of these oils are thought to stimulate hair growth and strengthen the hair that we already have.

AminoMar C is a marine complex that is now found in many speciality shampoos, hair oils and ointments. The name brands retail for a large amount of money, but the active ingredient can be found in generic and unnamed brands for a fraction of the price. AminoMar C is thought to strengthen existing cells and regenerate older, weaker ones.

Whatever the plan for hair regeneration, the key is consistency. Most treatments do not yield results for several months and need to be administered several times a week, without fail, to keep the nutrients in an effective cycle. Chopping and changing oils will not work, nor will moving between one treatment to another entirely. If in doubt, many health food and holistic shops will have readily made, tested treatments that are safer and probably more consistent than any homemade remedy. The key is that baldness is not irreversible.
