Working out is all well and good, and it’s great if we have time in the day to fit a weight loss regimen in. However, the sad fact is that most of us don’t, and our keep fit routine is often relegated to before or after work. With that in mind, focusing on diet is another way to fight the battle against being overweight.

It is very easy to simply head to the canteen during lunch or to a local supermarket or cafe that does some kind of excellent and affordable meal deal. But these processed foods are often packed full of sugar and fat, which is par for the course with convenience meals. It’s also very expensive. It only takes five or 10 minutes in the morning to put together a healthy salad with a filling feel to it; that is, making use of things such as egg whites, beans, pulses and nuts. Top that off with some 0% fresh cream or yoghurt and we have a low-calorie, nutritional meal that will assist in weight loss. Even swapping out white bread for brown will see dramatic results. Changing out crisps and potato chips for their lentil, rice or kale equivalent will dramatically reduce fat content without sacrificing taste or convenience.

Lastly, look at sugar and milk intake in our drinks. If someone offers to make a coffee it’s probably going to be a higher than usual fat content (semi skimmed is a safe bet with communal office purchases!) and a few teaspoons of sugar. Swapping down to skimmed, or even a non-dairy milk altogether will yield results over weeks and months, as will reducing sugar intake by opting for a sweetener or just no sugar at all. A good quality cup of black coffee with no sugar is actually a rather hardcore office drink and also assists in fat burning, as long as it is drunk in moderation to prevent acclimatising.

Busy does not need to equal unhealthy. And the healthier the diet, the healthier the mind. It takes only a few extra minutes per day, but will add years on to your life.
